About Karen
Karen Congram (she/her) is an accessible education specialist, working in Southwestern Ontario, Canada in the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. She has 30 years of experience, teaching in K-12 schools in Ontario. Karen served as a Learning for All Coach for the Avon Maitland District School Board, supporting classroom teachers to design inclusive class environments; and as a resource teacher and Head of Learning Services in a large, inclusive secondary school.
In 2024, Karen completed the Master of Education program at Wilfrid Laurier University. There, she investigated barriers to participation in school for students who cannot rely on vocal speech to be heard and understood. Karen completed a Certificate in Teaching Students with Complex Communication Needs through the University of Alberta in 2022. She has consulted in schools for multiple students who communicate using eye-gaze technology. Her daughter, Abby lives with Rett syndrome and teaches her mom something new every day. |
FLASH Camp
Karen is a co-founder and volunteer at the annual Family Literacy and AAC Camp on the Shores of Huron. Founded in 2023, this camp offers families an immersive language experience where they can become more fluent in conversations using augmentative and alternative communication systems and where they learn to teach and to advocate for the necessary next steps in learning.
