It can feel overwhelming to be a parent and caregiver to someone with complex medical needs. We appreciate the opportunity to support our kids to learn to communicate*, but it comes with an impossible to-do list. This is a chance for parents/caregivers to get the information, coaching, and support they need to provide an enriching communication environment for their children who use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). Participants are encouraged to set attainable goals (next steps), and to support each other in reaching their goals. This makes the role of parenting/caregiving feel much less overwhelming. Remember: It's not a race.
All parent groups are virtual.
Each session will have one mini lesson to prompt discussion. Participants will also be encouraged to set personal goals for next steps in AAC implementation.
These groups are intended for communication partners only, not the people who use AAC. My work is focused on building better communication environments by removing opportunity barriers. If you're looking for something for your child, please contact me for a referral to an excellent teacher who leads AAC groups.
* When I use the term "communicate" in the context of education, it always includes literacy. Reading and writing are the superpowers needed for authentic communication!
